Three Ingredient Affordable Protein Drink

I needed a drink that was an alternative to expensive store bought protein drinks. My drink had to be both pocketbook AND body friendly. Given that I have endometriosis, gut issues, and severe allergies, these drinks requirements were high. Enter hemp hearts.

A user on Lemon8 actually told me about hemp and I told her that I’d try them. It took me some time to finally do so but girl when I did, I did! I’ve been experimenting with hemp in so many ways and loving them ever since. One of the ways using them has been pivotal is in creating my own homemade protein drinks.

It’s so easy to make a protein drink using hemp seeds. Those little gems are full of protein! The bonus is that you can make the drink any flavor or taste you want, simply by changing the ingredients. The food hack is that hemp takes on the flavor of whatever it’s in. Although it does give the drink a slightly nutty taste, which is delicious!

Creating a drink this way gives me total control over the ingredients in the drinks. I know there are no yucky additives, synthetics, or anything I don’t want in my body, or that’re unhealthy. Plus, it’s super easy to make. Also, there are times when the hemp hearts go on sale, making them even cheaper to use in your everyday foods and drinks. I got the package pictured here for $3.00 off, at Kroger. So instead of the customary price of $9.49, I got them for $6.49. It was a great deal.

For the drink I made here I used:

Outshine smoothie cubes- gut supporter: 1 package

Bob’s Red Mill organic hemp hearts: ¼ cup

Almond Breeze unsweetened almond milk: 1 cup

Put everything in a blender and blend until it’s the consistency you like.

Enjoy

I ate my protein drink with a toasted Trader Joe’s everything but the bagel seasoning ciabatta roll, with vegan butter by Earth Balance.
