What is Galentine’s Day and Why You Should Celebrate It

Valentine’s Day is the day for those in love. We all know that. But what if you have no special someone in your life? Or, what if you do have your person but you also want to celebrate others that you love, or maybe even yourself? Enter Galentine’s Day- a creative moment that helps you cherish those around you.

The phrase Galentine’s Day can be attributed to the comedian Amy Poehler. In February of 2010, on the show “Parks and Recreation”. Poehler's character, Leslie Knope describes the holiday as:

"What's Galentine's Day? Oh, it's only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It's like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus, frittatas. —"Galentine's Day," Parks and Recreation, 2010

After this the concept took off and by the late 2010’s it was being celebrated by women around the world, regularly. Now, you don’t have to subscribe to getting with your girls on February 13th. As a matter of fact, you really don’t have to designate any specific date. Simply pick a day, plan your festivities, and commence showing those around you that you appreciate them.

Ladies often gather and go to brunch, the movies, and have drinks. Some even go all out and do lavish parties. I personally enjoy getting with my girls and also designated a special day solely to honor myself. After all, I’m the biggest best friend I’ve got and ever will have. Whether you choose to take the time to hang with everyone you hold dear, or chill back and have some me time, give Galentine’s Day a try.
